TSC Revised Qualifications For P1 To Teach In Junior Secondary. The competency based curriculum has finally been implemented in Kenya. Ever since, most of the workload has shifted to secondary school. Workload in the primary school has reduced owing to the fact that two classes have been scrapped off.
The first cohort of CBC did their KPSEA exams in 2022. The following year, they enrolled in junior secondary schools all over the country. However, it should be noted that the junior schools were domiciled in existing primary schools.
Initially , it was proposed the junior secondary could have been shifted to secondary schools. However, the presidential working party came up with reforms to domicile it in primary schools.
COMPOSITION OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
Junior secondary school will comprise of grade 7, 8 and 9. Once learners in grade 6 sit for KPSEA exam, they enroll to junior schools in the same school setting. The old 8.4.4 system is slowly being phased out. The new curriculum is now 2.6.3.3.3 system.
INTERPRETATION OF 2.6.3.3.3
2.6.3.3.3 means that 2 years for pre-primary, then 6 years in primary followed by 3 years in junior school. Additionally another 3 years in senior school then finally 3 years in tertiary institutions.
DOMICILING OF JUNIOR SCHOOLS
However, despite the fact that junior schools have been domiciled in primary schools, there has been a myriad of challenges in those institutions. The challenges range from poor infrastructure to inadequate human resource . Nevertheless, the government is making efforts to improve the infrastructure.
The government has made frantic efforts to recruit teachers into junior secondary school. There are several learning areas that need teachers in those schools. Additionally, the government has also given an opportunity to primary school teachers with prerequisite documents to be deployed to junior schools.

We shall clearly highlight all the required requirements P1 teachers need to posses for them to qualify to junior schools.
The requirements are as below stated;
- A diploma and degree in special needs education
- Diploma and degree in Early childhood development education
- Diploma(major option)
- Diploma in education, secondary option plus a C+ in KCSE with at least a C+ in two teaching subjects
The TSC report on readiness to implement CBC curriculum presented additional qualifications that will see P1 teachers be deployed to junior schools. Teachers with degrees and masters will be deployed provided they have the minimum KCSE grades required and have done 2 teaching subjects, secondary option.
