According to the latest news from the government, a total of 26000 junior secondary school intern teachers will be confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms. The teachers have been on strike for the past three weeks. The teachers have been demanding good working conditions and better pay.
The court recently declared the internship program illegal. Consequently, the court asked TSC to compensate the intern teachers the period they have been working with little pay. In addition, the court asked TSC to confirm these teachers into permanent and pensionable terms by August 1st 2024.

On a monthly basis, intern teachers in junior secondary schools pocket ksh 20,000 as gross pay. Those interns in primary schools pocket ksh. 15,000 as gross pay. However, these stipends they get are subject to statutory deductions .
The sad part of this narrative is that these teachers are not entitled to any allowance. Consequently, there is no health insurance cover for the aforementioned teachers.

Upon confirmation, the degree interns graduate teachers will begin at job group C2. This job group is comparable to the primary school senior teacher.
Salary scale for C2 Teachers
Under job category C2, the salary scale for teachers lies between sh 36,621 and sh 43, 694 which is the peak for C2 teachers.
The newly employed teacher will start at a basic salary of sh 36,621 and their salaries will shoot upwards automatically after completion of three years.
Teachers working in Nairobi city and its environs will be entitled to a housing allowance of sh 16,500.

Those in other major municipalities will get sh 12,800 whereas those in minor municipalities will pocket ksh 9600. Those in other regions get sh 7500.
In addition, the teachers will be entitled to an annual leave allowance of ksh 6,000 paid every January of the year.
There is also a commuter allowance payable to all teachers. A hardship allowance of ksh 10,900 is also paid to teachers working in hardship areas.
