KUPPET Pledges Support To Intern Teachers Strike. The Kenya Union of post primary education teachers has now pledged full support to the jss intern teachers strike. Intern teachers have been demonstrating demanding being converted into permanent and pensionable terms.
The union has asked the government to allocate funds to hire the teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
In addition, the ongoing strike has been a menace. More than 2.5 million grade 7 and 8 learners have been greatly affected by the strike. On top of that, schools closed for a further two weeks due to excess flooding across the country.

The KUPPET secretary general Akello Misori highlighted the impact of the ongoing strike. He explained how the strike has halted learning in junior schools across the country. Learners have been unattended for the past two weeks as a result.
KUPPET Pledges Support To Intern Teachers Strike
The secretary General wrote letters to the Teachers service commission, parliament and the National treasury about the issue. He sought their intervention to ensure teachers grievances are resolved and normalcy resumes.
Additionally, Misori argued that TSC needs to look for a way of solving this crisis and ensure the 46000 teachers are hired on permanent and pensionable terms. He urged TSC to try and renegotiate within the legal frameworks and resolve the employment crisis. The KUPPET secretary general has now called for an urgent meeting with TSC to try get an amicable solution.
Treasury to allocate funds for confirmation of teachers
In addition, treasury has been advised to allocate funds meant to confirm the teachers under permanent and pensionable terms. In a letter, dated May 14, addressed to National treasury principal secretary, it requested for immediate release of funds for confirmation of all intern teachers.
Owino Okello is the chairman of Nairobi intern teachers. He reiterated the teachers’ commitment to downing their tools till their demands are met. This is despite threats coming from all corners. He referenced the Labour court’s ruling that rendered the internship program illegal. The court found TSC to have gone against the labor laws by hiring registered and qualified teachers under the internship program.
Okello indicated that they will continue obeying the court orders by staying away from schools. The ongoing intern teachers strike depicts on how the education system is under threat. It means the teachers need to be hired under permanent and pensionable terms for the strike to be over.
KUPPET’S call on the government to find an amicable solution depicts on how they value the intern teachers. This calls for a resolve to end the strike and return to normalcy.
